Tips For Setting Up Your First Aquarium

Tips For Setting Up Your First AquariumSetting up your own aquarium fish tank may look easy at first, but it can really be a lot of work. In all fairness, it really should be a lot of work. It’s one thing to add some gold fish to a fishbowl, it’s another thing to have a proper aquarium set up with the purpose of housing and displaying a variety of more exotic fish. By no means is this a task to be taken lightly.

The first thing that anyone should do before taking any steps to joining the ranks of the casual aquarists is to do a lot of research. Remember, your goal is to be taking care of living things, living things that are used to living in lakes or oceans, not in small tanks in a person’s home. That’s a big responsibility. If that isn’t enough to drive your research, then consider the investment you are making. Some fish can run you hundreds of dollars, and the last thing you’ll want is for that investment to go down the drain.

You will, therefore, want to research the types of fish you are most interested in owning, and the types of aquariums that will suit them best. At the same time, find out what it is those fish need in terms of food, how much that food will cost and how often the fish need to be fed. Lastly, find out, if you don’t already know, what is involved with maintaining an aquarium. How do you clean them, how do you care for them, and how often will they need your attention?

When you start looking for an aquarium to purchase, the two things you will want to consider are size and price. Most importantly, you need somewhere to put it. Don’t overdo things buy buying a large tank if there isn’t room in your home for it to be displayed. Remember, you can’t put the tank just anywhere. It will need sufficient space that’s close to a wall outlet and, in most cases, away from a window.

Your costs are going to go far beyond the basic aquarium in most cases, which is another reason why researching your needs will pay off. For example, a fish tank that costs $100 might not be functional until you add a few hundred dollars more worth of accessories, such as filters and lights. Smaller aquariums can be purchased as complete units, so this may be a good idea when starting out.

After you’ve brought your fish tank home, don’t get too excited and do too much at once. You’ll need to double check everything before filling it with water and adding fish. Once you’ve done that, moving it, even slightly, can be quite difficult if not impossible.

It’s also a good idea to decorate your aquarium with plants and other decorations. This isn’t just for the aesthetic, but for the good of the fish. They will want those things for both a homey feeling as well as for giving them a place to hide and relax. Once you have everything the way you want it, and you’re confident that you’re prepared to take care of them, you just have to add the fish to the tank and enjoy their beauty.
