Do ferrets make good pets? Some will agree to this while others will say no. But one thing for certain is that they are in demand right now and they are ranked number three as the pet to have in the home. If you are still not convinced, perhaps reading 10 good reasons will make you reconsider.

First, ferrets are cute. They come in black, brown, white or with mixed fur. They are longer than hamsters as they can grow up to 20 inches in length, 5 inches in height and weigh about 2 to 4 pounds. These creatures can live for 7 to 10 years with tender and loving care from their owner.

Second, they are very playful creatures. This will allow you to hold them instead of just looking through the glass to see what they are doing.

Third, they are very affectionate, friendly and sociable even if there is another ferret in the house.

Fourth, ferrets are intelligent animals. They can be trained to perform some tricks and toilet trained so you don’t see any litter or stain on your carpet.

Fifth, these creatures do not make a lot of noise in the noise. The only thing you have to be concerned about is cleaning up the mess that they caused.

Sixth, because ferrets are small, you don’t need to buy a huge cage. Surely, the ideal kind which measures 18” x 18” x 30” will not take that much space inside your home.

Seventh, ferrets are also easy to feed. Just make sure that what you buy contains high levels of protein and low levels of fat. This must never be rich in carbs or sugar or ever replaced with food that is intended for other animals.

Eighth, they are very curious creatures. They love to crawl to dark places like inside your pants or under the couch. They love to hide as well as jump from high places.

Ninth, every animal needs to exercise and giving your ferret a workout is not that difficult. You can take them out for a walk using a small harness.

Lastly, each ferret is different so your experience is much different with another just like the people you meet in the neighborhood.

If you are thinking of getting a ferret, you have to decide whether you want to buy one for adopt it from a shelter. You will also have to check if it is legal to own one where you live and if there is a vet that will treat it if there are any problems. You have to be one hundred percent sure you are ready to take on the responsibility because most shelters are not willing to take it back and this creature will have a hard time adjusting to the wild if you choose to set it free.

Ferrets can only survive if they are entertained and are in a safe environment. This means making your home ferret proof because they could cause serious damage to your home and harm to themselves. So although you have a cage, remember that they need to come out so both you and the creature can have some fun.

Just like other pets, they also need to be cleaned, vaccinated and undergo regular checkups.

Learn the safe and easy way to pill your pet … 10-year old Natasja makes it look easy!

Sooner or later you will probably need to get your pet to swallow medication in pill form. Luckily, most of the meds these days have a taste your dog or cat actually likes. In other cases you can hide the pills in some food. We highly recommend pill-pockets because these treats are specially made for pets. You can also try using a small piece of hotdog, peanut butter or cheese to hide the pill in. CAUTION!! Never give a dog with pancreatitis, ANY fatty foods (not even a pill pocket). Even a small piece of fatty food could aggravate the condition and cause vomiting and severe abdominal pain. ALWAYS read the prescription or information label carefully. I’ll never forget the a lady who came into the clinic with her dog with an ear infection. We sent them home with antibiotics. A week later, the lady came back — upset — because the medication obviously wasn’t working. It turned out that the lady was putting the medication in the dog’s ear, even though the instructions clearly stated to give the medicine by mouth. I’ve heard stories of this happening to children as well!! In addition to Natasja’s great “how to” demonstration, you might also want to consider the following tips:

Tip 1: Try not to call your pet to you in order to give her medicine. You don’t want her to associate being called with being dosed! Always seek her out yourself.

Tip 2: A second person to help may come in handy if your pet is especially large or difficult to control.

Tip 3: Stay nearby until you know the pill has been swallowed. You will be able to see the swallow reflex by looking at your pet’s throat. Especially dogs are adept at concealing their meds and spitting them out later. Also, try to get the pill as far back as possible (without getting bit).

Tip 4: If you’re having difficulty, check with your vet to see if it’s safe to give your pet a pill concealed in food and ask which kind of food he recommends (for example: cheese, cream cheese or peanut butter). “Pill Pockets” can also be used to conceal tablets and capsules and are available for dogs as well as cats (see the link below). Some foods interact badly with certain medications. Let your pet lick your fingers after you feed her the pill—that will ensure she swallows. Don’t hesitate to ask your vet or a technician to show you how to give your pet a pill. We sometimes need to wrap a towel around the cats who have front claws or use a loose muzzle on the dogs who are particularly prone to biting.

Tip 5: If your pet still doesn’t fall for the pill-in-the-food trick, crush the pill, mix it with a little sugar water. We discourage the use of syringes to squirt liquid into a dog’s mouth. Time and time again, animals end up with aspirate pneumonia from the fluid going down into the lungs. If this happens, you will have a much larger problem to deal with!!

Tip 6: Try a pet piller (available via the link below) to easily drop the pill in the back of your pet’s mouth without getting bit.

Tip 7: When the pill is all gone, praise your pet, and offer her some water and an appropriate treat to take away the taste and trauma!

There is tons of information on how to look after your ferrets health and enviornment, but ferret play? How do you enjoy ferret games?

Take a look…

Ferret guide

Ferret games are a great way of bonding with your ferret. What a great asset to be able to turn to a tried and trusted ferret game whenever you need it. This is a fantastic way to form a deep connection with your ferret.

Look at ferret games as a way to connect and bond and don’t take them too seriously. Utilize this to connect and have fun.

Let’s take a look at 5 ferret friendly games you can play that require the minimum of equipment…

Ferret Game 1 – Tug ‘O’ War

Grab your ferrets favourite toy and waggle it in front of them. When your ferret get’s hold of you can pull back and see whose the strongest. Ensure you and your ferret are having a great time, and that they don’t get frustrated or wound up.

Ferret Game 2 – Ferret Tag

Get your ferrets attention and then run off! Simple. Most will then give chase to find out what’s up. Run back after them and stop and run away again. Then give them a hug.

Ferret Game 3 – Ferret dig dig

Get a really big box and fill it with screwed up paper balls. Place a tasty snack in the box and let them rummage to get it. Watch how much your ferret enjoys this.

Ferret Game 4 – Ferret fly fishing

This is one of my favourite games. Connect a yummy treat to a very thin rope and then conect the rope to something you can use like a fishing rod. Let it hang infront of the ferret and lightly fling it about until the chase after it.

Ferret Game 5 – Ferret Ping-Pong

Grab a ping pong ball bounce it around in front of your ferret on a hard floor. Ferrets enjoy attempting to get it and you can play tease grabbing it before them too. All around good play.

Now it’s time to create games yourself?

For more great Ferret information check out The Ferret Blog

Ideally you should be giving your ferrets 2 hours of playtime a day and joining in games is a great way to bond with them.

You will be able to apply most of these right away. Have fun!

Having a pet ferret is almost like having any other pet, except they demand a little more attention. In a way, they are just like a young child because they will annoy you until you pay them attention and give them what they want.

When you get a ferret you will want to get a number of supplies along with the ferret. You will need a cage, a little box, litter, toys and especially food. A ferret has scent glands which make them have a musty stinky smell. Many people do not realize that ferrets need this because they release the smell to moisturize their skin.

You should never let your ferret have rubber of any kind. A ferret can not digest the rubber and it could die. If you decide to get this kind of pet you will want to make sure and get plenty of food, a nice sized cage, at least one toy and some treats are always nice for any pet.

There are a lot of states which do not allow you to buy ferrets without it being spayed or neutered beforehand. This is to prevent you from breeding and reselling a ferret. This is actually a good thing because it prevents the over population of this exotic animal.

No animal deserves to spend their lives in a cage and a ferret will show you how depressed they are, if you leave them in a cage all the time. This is not fair to them, so make sure you are able to be home with them as much as possible, because they do not live a very long life, most of them do not live past ten.

If you are wondering how much ferrets cost without all the food, cage and toys they need. They usually run around a hundred dollars sometimes it may be more or less, this is depending on where you buy them. Sometimes there are people which sell their ferrets and they may charge more than the pet store, this is something you should check into before you buy if you are looking to save some money.

Remember, it is not fair to leave any ferret, sometimes improperly spelled farret, in a cage all day long, if you are too busy to pay attention to a pet and give it the proper care that is needed, you should not get it no matter how cute or adorable it is. A lot of people make this mistake and the poor animals only live out their life at the end of a leash or sitting in their cage alone, don’t make this mistake.

There are a lot of forms of ferret ailment that the pets could contract either due to their diet plan or the surroundings.

Food and drinking water are the simple demands in both humans and animals to survive. It won’t only give us the nutrients that we will need for our everyday activities but it also nourish us to continue on our regular activities.

The most popular problem in ferrets could be the intestinal blockage. This complication is characterized by vomiting, drooling, and constipation and could sometimes prove fatal. If the scenario will not improve rushing them towards the vet is really important.

In the early days of human history, wherein exotic pets are staying captured inside the wild and sold to be raised as pets, ferrets is on the list of several animals that continues to be domesticated even throughout the times from the good kings. In the 19th century, domesticated ferrets are currently being fed by cat food. They have less understanding of what the ferret’s dietary demands unlike today.

Like cats, ferrets are meat eaters which need 36% of great protein and 28% of fat in their diet. Ferrets have the difficulty of digesting plant protein given that they’ve a brief digestive track. One on the crucial mineral with your ferret’s eating habits is taurine.

Having a tough time selecting the correct food for your ferret? When you have bought the ferret from a breeder, it’s constantly a superb begin to ask for the brand that the breeders give to their ferrets. Then possibly later on, you are able to change the foodstuff brand. If your ferret becomes ill, baby foods created of poultry is best for brief term food items source. Avoid giving your ferret’s substantial vegetable protein, it may cause bladder stones.

Unlike from the early old days where ferrets are staying fed by cat food, these days plenty of pet stores and shops sell ferret food items that gives them the simple nutrients and proper eating habits for them to grow healthy and active. It is greatest tat you introduce your ferrets in different meals brands which you really feel is excellent for them. Just in case the foodstuff brand you usually give them ran out of stock. Ferrets are really sensitive when it comes to their food. If you’ll find sudden changes within their diet, they would definitely go on a hunger strike and you don’t want that to happen.

Kits ought to be offered foodstuff which is damped with h2o given that they have a hard time eating hard kibbles. Just in time for them to chew hard kibble. It is also not an excellent idea to give your ferret’s soft meals (that is becoming damped in water) it can cause them prolapsed rectum which can only be corrected by a veterinarian.

I would also suggest that you learn more research about How Long Do Ferrets Live.

If you are taking a ferret as a pet then the most important task would be to get it vaccinated. Ferrets can be trained effectively, but it is not so easy to train them, as compared to dogs and cats. The difficult part for training ferrets is to make him learn the household rules.

The easiest method to be adopted for training is to reward the ferret for good behavior, as in the case of other animals. Keeping it caged and paying no attention, even if it howls or growls, is another method that can be used for transforming it into an obedient animal.

Ferrets like activity and are constantly on the move. As a result they may mess up the rooms of the house. It also has the habit of nipping everything and everybody. These annoying habits can be removed, and he can be trained not to mess the rooms and use the litter.

As in the case of other pet animals, ferrets can be trained to come if its name is called out. By training ferrets in this way, helps you to save a lot of time and anxious moments, as ferrets usually creeps into some small places or holes. You should also remember to reward the ferret with food as and when it reacts to your call. This will also make him obedient.

Ferrets usually love chicken pieces or semi-moist liver flavored treats. A good idea when training ferrets would be to place some semi-moist treats in a tin box and shake it when you call the ferret. He will soon learn to come as soon as he hears his name and the rattling sound of the tin.

Frequent interaction is very important for raising a happy and healthy ferret. If the ferret is a new baby pet, the owner should spend some time with it during the early days of its domesticating. By nature ferrets are playful, especially when they are babies, and they can easily be trained during this period.

Letting the ferret unwind and relax after his boisterous play and then train him is a perfect way for training, because ferrets pay more attention in a relaxed mood. As a ferret feels more comfortable in familiar locations, training him in the same place is recommended.

For training ferrets you should spare time and have patience, as you can train your pet ferret to roll over, sit up or fetch things by repeating the things and rewarding him from time to time. All this will ensure that in a short period of time, your ferret will be really responding to you.

If you’ve never been a ferret owner before you might be surprised to find out just how important the right ferret cage really is. There are still pet stores that sell ferrets out of aquariums filled with cedar chips, which is really an unhealthy environment for your little guys. The right cage, the right bedding, and the right ventilation can help your ferret live a long, healthy, and happy life.

It’s quite common for ferrets to come to their new owners as kits, and they will need to grow into their full adult size while in their cage. Try not to consider the ferret as a pocket pet because his needs are quite different. Offering your ferret a living space that allows for privacy, toileting areas, hide away sleeping spaces, and in-cage entertainment is essential to his overall health.

Play time in his cage will be very important to your ferret when he is left on his own. He will need enough space to do this. Without the ability to play on his own he may end up becoming destructive inside his cage from boredom. If he doesn’t receive enough out of the cage play time and has no way to play inside his cage, behavioral and health problems are bound to arise.

A lot of pet ferret characters are excellent at figuring out the puzzle that opens their cage door. If you build a cage at home you will have to pay very close attention to the doorway construction. It doesn’t take long for these smart little creatures to figure out their escape route. Once they learn it, they will never unlearn it. Thus, it is best to make sure they have a very secure door to keep them safe from their own curiosity when you can’t supervise play time.

The cage will need to be well ventilated in order to prevent health complications. The glass of an aquarium in sunlight can become very hot. Just as a car sitting in the sun can warm up to dangerous levels, so can a glass aquarium cage. Wire cages give your ferret much better ventilation.

Ventilation is equally as necessary when it comes to keeping them healthy around their bedding. It has been proven that the cedar chip bedding can be disastrous for ferrets, especially when confined to a cage without air flow. Recycled newspaper bedding is much healthier for them, but you still want to ensure that there is ample fresh air moving through the cage.

The more you learn about selecting ferret cages the more you start to see things from their perspective. Long periods of time at home alone will be a much happier and healthier experience if you take the time to understand what they need.

For your ferret to achieve a long life span, the correct ferret diet is essential. Without proper feeding your ferret is at risk for some severe health troubles. Ferrets evolved to be meat eaters and need a low fiber, high protein diet in order to thrive. Several years ago the best choice for feeding ferrets was high quality cat food. You can still purchase premium quality cat food for your ferret, but there are now many different ferret food choices on the market that provide the combination that your pet needs – high quality fat along with low carbohydrates. The proper mix will help ensure that your ferret can achieve a maximum life span.
The proper diet is extremely important for a baby ferret. Here’s what to look for when buying food for your ferret: 35-40% protein, 18-30% fat, 2% fiber, 21 amino acids, less than 7% ash and some good carbs such as rice flour or brewer’s yeast. Watch out for some ferret foods that use frozen fish as your ferret will not eat it. It is not uncommon for ferrets to refuse foods they don’t like until the starve. Buying a higher quality ferret food can be more expensive than a premium cat food, however, as ferrets don’t really eat very much, supplying them with high quality food may not be that costly in the long run. If you give your ferret a healthy diet, supplements will not be necessary.
Your ferret needs to eat at least twice a day to make sure it gets the number of calories it needs to preserve good health. Because ferrets are small animals the portion sizes you feed them should be small as well. With a moist diet, the food can only be left out for about forty five minutes and then, if it has not been eaten in that time frame, it should be removed. If you’d like their food to be accessible for longer than that, you might want to think about using a dry pellet food. Dry pellets can be left in the cage all day and they are also a good idea to help keep your ferret’s teeth clean. If you choose a dry pellet diet for your pet, remember that there should also be fresh water available. Use a dish for the fresh water as ferrets seem to prefer drinking from a dish rather than a water bottle. Remember to change their water frequently to keep it fresh and clean.
Treats aren’t necessary for your ferret but they can be helpful when you’re trying to housebreak your pet. Good snack options are cooked eggs and meats. You should stay away from high-sugar fruits or candy as well as any dairy products like ice cream or milk. Furthermore, be sure to avoid nuts or nut products. Any of these things can cause nutritional problems. Health problems that your ferret could encounter include malnutrition, obesity, tooth decay, diarrhea, intestinal blockage, insulinoma and hypoglycemia. Always use treats sparingly so your ferret won’t refuse to eat its regular food. Vegetables and grains are not well tolerated by ferrets, so make sure to avoid them. And, never, ever give your ferret onions, they are poisonous to your pet.
Making sure your ferret has a healthy diet is crucial in maintaining a long and healthy life. Your ferret will be content, comfy and less susceptible to any life-threatening illnesses. Most ferret owners are known for giving their pets lots of love and affection, however, the best way to be kind to your ferret is to make sure they are fed correctly.
