In Scotland, there is a group of islands, known as the Shetland Islands, and this is where the pony got its name. During the late 19th century, the Shetland pony was bred in large numbers, exported throughout the world, and increased in popularity.
Because of an act of Parliament in England, the demand for these ponies increased. Children had been used to haul small tubs of coal from the mine shafts, but when law prohibited children from working in mines any more, an alternative was needed, and the Shetland pony, small but sturdy, was found fit for the job.
